The Poetry Recitation Competition 2024

The Competition
- Students are required to memorise one poem from the list prescribed by Dante Melbourne.
- Students are to select a poem from the list corresponding to the year level of the section into which they have been entered*.
- Students must recite their poem in front of one judge - no cue cards or prompts are permitted.
*Year 11 students studying Units 3&4 must be entered into the Year 12 competition and choose a poem from this Year Level.
Categories
Entries for the Poetry Recitation Competition will be accepted from students in Years 9, 10, 11 & 12 in the following categories:
Madre Lingua
Those students recently arrived in Australia and/or were born and educated (for a number of years) in Italy.
Italian-Australian
Students who have exposure to Italian language outside of school. These students hear Italian, or an Italian dialect, spoken amongst their family or participate in a community language school program. These students have some other regular contact with the Italian language additional to the tuition received at school.
Non-Italian
Students who do not have exposure to Italian language outside of school. These students’ exposure to Italian is solely through lessons received at school. These students may be of Italian descent, but their families no longer speak Italian (i.e. Italian is not spoken amongst family living in Australia, including grandparents, in any capacity).

Cost
- $10 per student (where the school is a member of the Dante Alighieri Society Melbourne)
- $12 per student (where the school is NOT a member of the Dante Alighieri Society of Melbourne)
The competition is run on a not for profit basis, with the generous help of many volunteers, the entry fees covers all aspects of the competition, however, for schools who wish to have the Certificates mailed, a postage fee will apply.
How to enter
To enter, please follow the steps below.
Confirmation of your recitation time, date and location will be announced in mid May 2024.

- Read the definitions of Italian-Australian and Non-Italian categories above.
- Collate your list of participants in Years 9-12 and fill in the Student Entry List
- Enter your school in the competition by completing the google form (attach the Student Entry List to the form) by 5.00pm Thursday 2 May 2024
Confirmation of your recitation time, date and location will be announced in mid May 2024.
Please note: It is the school's responsibility to arrange:
- Any excursion documentation to enable the participants to travel to and from the recitation venue.
- An appropriate space and technology should the school elect to participate online.
- Ensure payment of the participation fees PRIOR to the recitation (we will issue the invoice in mid May with the confirmation of your participation)
