Please note, the definitions of categories has changed for 2023. Please read carefully.

The Competition

Students are required to memorise one poem from the list prescribed by Dante Melbourne. Students are to select a poem from the list corresponding to the year level of the section into which they have been entered*. Students must recite their poem in front of one judge - no cue cards or prompts are permitted. Any student who reads their poem will receive an N.

*Year 11 students studying Units 3&4 must be entered into the Year 12 competition and choose a poem from this Year Level.

Sections

Entries for the Poetry Recitation Competition will be accepted from students in Years 9, 10, 11 & 12 in the following sections:

Madre Lingua
Those students recently arrived in Australia and/or were born and educated (for a number of years) in Italy.

Italian-Australian
Students who have exposure to Italian language outside of school. These students hear Italian, or an Italian dialect, spoken amongst their family or participate in a community language school program. These students have some other regular contact with the Italian language additional to the tuition received at school.

Non-Italian
Students who do not have exposure to Italian language outside of school. These students’ exposure to Italian is solely through lessons received at school. These students may be of Italian descent, but their families no longer speak Italian (i.e. Italian is not spoken amongst family living in Australia, including grandparents, in any capacity).
