The Melbourne Branch of the Dante Alighieri Society was established in 1896. Part of a global organisation committed to promoting Italian language and culture internationally, Dante Melbourne links Victoria to the heart of Rome. As the oldest branch of the Dante Alighieri Society in an English speaking country, we are a dynamic and ever-evolving part of the local and international Italian community.
2024 HIGH SCHOOL POETRY RECITAL COMPETITION
This is our biggest annual competition for students of Italian to recite poetry. Every year thousands of students across Victoria participate and are recognised for their excellence.
Last year 37 students from years 9-12 were recognised for their recitals of classical and contemporary poetry.
Round 1 between 3 -7 June 2024 (online or in person). The finals will be held on Tuesday 25 June 2024. (in person)

7.00pm Wednesday 15 May: POETRY & PASTA - The Olive Tree
A salon style event for lovers of Italian culture and food on the theme of the Olive Tree.
Artist, journalist and author of "Growing Honest Food-An Oasis of Italian Tradition in the Suburb", Gabriella Gommersall Hubbard, will lead the evening with with poems, readings and discussions at a shared table of excellent Italian food and wine.
Shared pasta dishes and salads prepared especially by University Cafe, with a glass wine from wine specialists Alepat & Taylor.
To celebrate the Olive Tree, the evening will include tastings of Australian grown olive oil, including Little General and Villa Varapodi by Rose Creek Estate.
Gabriella Gommersall Hubbard has published works including "Cent'anni di Ricordi" in Italian; she is the translator of "Piccola ma di marca". She is a frequent public speaker on food and the history of food. She is a visual artist and a photojournalist with Il Globo newspaper, producer presenter with Rete Italia radio. Gabriella has been a teacher of Italian at all levels for 20 years and is a valued Committee Member of the Dante Alighieri Society of Melbourne.

PRIMARY SCHOOL POSTER COMPETITION AWARDS
Congratulations to all the 2023 Primary School Poster Competition participants, the youngest members of our Dante club.
It was a very special day at the University of Melbourne on the 19 November as the next generation of Italophiles is inducted. The musical performance by Ms Nicolle Cheriton and Mr. Jose Mesquita, Stella Mansswr, Spandan Dhakal, Maya Mikhael, Abdul Kassem, Leila Yang, Rani Matti and Hussain al Badri was a special highlight! Big thanks to Jessica Gallito and Imogen Lazarus for all their work in coordinating the competition.

Dante Alighieri Society and CoAsIt New Memorandum of Understanding Signed
The Dante Alighieri Society of Melbourne and Co.As.It Italian Assistance Association have entered into a formal Memorandum of Understanding to cement our work together and promote Italian language and culture in Melbourne and beyond. This will mean the two organisations will coordinate a program of language courses, prizes, scholarships and events that will strengthen Italian culture in Melbourne. Read the article in Il Globo
